Causes of OCD
The causes of OCD is still not proven although it is stated that OCD might be the result of either neurobiological, psychological, genetic or environmental factors. The neurobiological causes of OCD looks at a possible defect in seretonin, which is a chemical in the brain that sends messages between brain cells and is thought to involve in managing everything from anxiety, to memory, to sleep. The psychological causes of OCD involves our negative thoughts and behaviour patterns. A theory formed from the possible psychological factors that cause OCD called the learning theory states that developing learned negative thoughts and behaviour patterns may result in being diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder. Genetic factors that may cause OCD focus on other family members that also suffer from this disorder. Environmental factors look at the result of traumatic life occurrences. (OCDUK, 2013)
